7 DAY WESTERN CARIBBEAN CRUISE WITH PRINCESS CRUISES

Caribbean Princess, 7 Day Caribbean Cruise, Princess Cruises, Princess Cays, Bahamas, Ocho Rios, Jamaica, Cozumel, Mexico, Plus Size Travel, Musings of a Curvy Lady, Plus Size Swimwear, Plus Size Travel, Cruise Vacation

Just a few weeks ago I was swimming in sparkling turquoise waters and laying on powder soft beaches in the Caribbean with a coconut mojito in both hands.

I’m currently doing laundry on a Friday night with Bridgerton Season 2 streaming in the background, so you see; a lot can change in a couple of weeks.

But let’s go back friends.  Let’s go back to when I embarked on a lovely 7-Day-Western Caribbean Cruise aboard Caribbean Princess — one of the 15 ships in the Princess Fleet.

This was my second sailing with Princess Cruises since their return to service last summer.  Cruising post Covid is a little different but I’m happy to update you with some health protocols that are now in play aboard Princess Ships.  Definitely bookmark this post if you’re interested in booking a Princess Cruise.  It’s such a quick and easy vacation package with all the heavy lifting done for you.  But what I’ve come to learn is the best way to book a cruise to get your money’s worth is actually while on board a Princess Cruise.  The perks of cruising are endless.

BEFORE YOU CRUISE

Before embarking I had to provide proof of vaccination which required being fully vaccinated 2 weeks prior to the sail date.  I also had to provide a negative covid test within 72 hours of the sail date.

You’re also required to fill out an online health questionnaire 24 hours prior to embarking.  If anyone shows symptoms or is identified as high risk is referred to additional screen ing prior to boarding.  Secondary screening and health checks throughout the cruise is will be done when necessary.  I was impressed also with the ability to do contact tracing if anyone were to test positive on board.

Because CDC recommendations may change, the Princess’ Health Care Protocols are subject to change due to global conditions and circumstances with the virus.  It’s good to regularly check their site for updates which they do regularly.

WHILE ON BOARD

Wearing a mask while on board was an obvious and biggest change to sailing culture but so easy to adopt.  Wearing a mask and physical distancing is now recommended in most areas but required when in line to embark/disembark the ship.

Hand washing and sanitizing stations are located at the entrances of venues and high trafficked areas all dining areas.   It’s required to wash or sanitize your hands prior to entering any dining area and a helpful Princess Crew member stands by to monitor the flow of traffic and offer gentle reminders when necessary.

PRINCESS CAYS, BAHAMAS

The first port of this trip was to Princess Cays, Bahamas.  Princess Cays, a private island resort which allows you to keep the MedallionClass treatment on-shore.

Fully equipped with MedallionNet, I could have easily stayed in touch for work if I wanted to but that was a BIG “if.”    We had a full day of swimming with stingrays, riding banana boats and lounging under cabanas ahead after all.

SEA DAYS

Days at sea are meant for sleeping in, hitting the gym, eating all the food, drinking all the drinks, lounging by the pool, treatments at the spa, being entertained in the Princess Theatre and twirling the night away at SkyWalkers.

There is seriously not enough sea days to explore everything around the ship but you should definitely try.

I suggest taking one sea day to explore and one to rest and take it easy.  Pace yourself, you are on vacation after all!  I always enjoy getting to know the crew while on board on sea days. They are your inside scoop on the best spots on board and who makes the best Pina Coladas.

OCHO RIOS, JAMAICA

Ocho Rios has to be one of my favorite port days!  We had the best time!

After disembarking we headed to our excursion that we booked through Princess Cruises at Mystic Mountain Adventure.

It’s so easy to plan out your port days with the best vacation planners.  They take care of everything and you just have to show and and have an amazing time!

We took an aerial chairlift through the jungle and up a mountain where we saw the most amazing views of Caribbean Princess docked.  We rode rode some fun rides like a Jamaican bobsled through the jungle and a ragamuffin.  We had a quick bite to eat there before heading to Dunn River Falls where we hiked up 600 foot waterfall.

THIS WAS AMAZING! It was so thrilling and one of the best things I could have ever done.  I get a little adventurous on vacation and we had the best guides helping us along the way.  10 out of 10, would recommend.

We grabbed some Jamaican beef patties on our way back to the ship where we ended up having the most amazing dining experience at the Chef’s Table.  The Chef’s Table is an exclusive multi-course dinner created and hosted by the ship’s executive chef for 10 guests.  It would be a perfect way to for celebrate an anniversary or milestone, or just making your cruise vacation even more amazing which I totally recommend.  It was a spectacle in every sense of the word and I loved it.  Limited space is available so make sure to ask for it as soon as you board on day 1.

COZUMEL, MEXICO

Our time in Cozumel was jammed packed and we made the most of being in this beautiful town.  Our excursion didn’t start until 1pm so we had some time to explore on our own.

We hopped off the ship with a tap of our OceanMedallion (it’s your ID, credit card and opens your stateroom sans hands) and we were off in a taxi headed to a tequila tour.

At the the tour we were welcomed with a fresh palomas, made and ate handmade chocolates and tortillas just like the ancient Mayan people did.  We then got to learn the art of making tequila and sampled over 10 different organic tequilas!

Let me tell you it was the best dang tequila I ever had.  No sting or burn and so so smooth.  We left with 3 bottles each!

After the tour our driver drove us to a pretty beach club to snap some pictures before grabbing some authentic street tacos on our way back to the port to start our excursion.  We did this all before noon!

A champagne catamaran swim and snorkel was the perfect way to end the day.  Honestly, any champagne catamaran situation is going to be my favorite kind of excursion.

I opted out of snorkeling but I did have the champgafn and a swim.  Jumping off a catamaran is a love language for me.  I even attempted to paddle board which was so much fun and I’m determined to practice so the next time I won’t be so wobbly.

Princess Cruises | Island Vibes Only

Among all the ports I visited while cruising aboard Caribbean Princess was in Roatan, Honduras.

Once we easily disembarked the ship with a tap of my Ocean Medallion, Carley and I took a 30 minute ride to the island of Big French Key.  I share more of my love of the island in a previous post here.

After spending a few hours exploring the island and having lunch I found a two story deck with lounge chairs overlooking the water that was absolutely breathtaking and empty.

I quickly took advantage and  snapped a few photos.

Changing outfits on a tropical island was no easy feat but I’m glad I did because those views were too good too miss.

At Sea with Princess Cruises

The vibe on sea days on Caribbean Princess are a totally different than on port days.  Port days can start early and run long —  depending on if you want to spend the majority of your time on the island.  Some people actually opt to stay on the ship the entire 7 days!  Whatever tickles your fancy.

For my friend Carley and I, days at sea were much more slower and chill.  It was a nice balance and contrast to our busy port days.

We took full advantage of sleeping in, room service with our MedallionClass Experience, spa days, some R+R at The Sanctuary and eating all of the food and exploring the ship that seemed to have something new to see each day.

By the end of the cruise we had a few favorite places bars and bartenders that remembered our names and our favorite drinks.

Skywalkers Nightclub is a must if you love a goodnight of dancing.  We also experienced some amazing live entertainment — the performers had legit real vocals.

Of all the places we discovered through our OceanCompass app my favorite place honestly on the entire ship was our balcony.  We could just sit out there all day and be perfectly content watching the waves crash into each other.

The views and sunsets were absolutely breathtaking and there is nothing like eating breakfast with only ocean surrounding you and fresh sea breeze in your hair.  I will never forget those mornings.

With a few taps on my OceanNow app I could keep the balcony chill vibes going and order a margarita or two and have it delivered right to me.

I couldn’t get over how the apps just elevated my cruise experience and good news is that Princess Cruises just announced that the MedallionClass Experience is coming to 6 new ships in 2020!  That means more opportunities and countries to visit with your Medallion and come back new.

Cruisin’ the Caribbean with Princess Cruises MedallionClass™

Are you a cruiser?  What do you think of when you first hear the word, cruise?  You definitely might have your reservations but I can say I am officially a bonafide cruiser and I can’t wait for my next one!

I recently sailed the Caribbean for a week with Princess Cruises aboard their Caribbean Princess to Grand Cayman, Roatan, Belize City and Cozumel!

Here’s the breakdown of my trip.

DAY 1 • Arrive at Fort Everglades Port and sail off celebration!
DAY 2 • Full Day at Sea
DAY 3 • Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands
DAY 4 • Roatan, Honduras
DAY 5 • Belize City, Belize
DAY 6 • Cozumel, Mexico
DAY 7 • Full Day at Sea
DAY 8 • Arrive at Fort Everglades Port in FLL and head home

Of course cruising the Caribbean was amazing but Princess Cruises really went over and beyond to make sure that each cruiser has a one of a kind experience thanks to the MedallionClass Experience.

The MedallionClass is a tech savvy innovative way to make your cruise experience personal, effortless and more enjoyable and it all starts with something as small as a quarter.

Every cruiser is given the OceanMedallion — this device can be worn in a few different ways depending on the accessory you pick; a sports band, clip, bracelet or a pendant.

I opted for a bright pink clip — shocker, right?!  It matched my bikini and I was very pleased.

Princess Cruises, Caribbean Princess, MedallionClass, MedallionClass Experience, Caribbean, Travel Blogger, Cruising the Caribbean, Plus Size Travel Princess Cruises, Caribbean Princess, MedallionClass, MedallionClass Experience, Caribbean, Travel Blogger, Cruising the Caribbean, Plus Size TravelThis Medallion is literally your key to stateroom and makes ship embarkment and disembarkment so easy!

So I got prepped weeks before my cruise right at home with the OceanReady app.  It’s an exclusive Princess MedallionClass app where I could enter all of my personal information and travel documents before embarking so just with a simple tap of my Medallion I was able to board Caribbean Princess and get poolside with drink in hand in no time flat.  You can either have your Medallion shipped to you before your trip or pick it up when you embark.

In typical Thamarr fashion of course I forgot my Medallion at home!  🤦🏾‍♀️  Of course I was freaking out but the Princess team came to the rescue and printed out a new Medallion for me at the Information Desk.  *Obviously try not to leave your Medallion at home.

With so many people on board if everyone left their’s at home it would be a big mess at the information desk.  I was so thankful to the entire crew for helping me get everything squared away to start using the linked features of the Medallion.

The Medallion also makes interacting with your ShipMates and the rest of the crew so much easier.

With my Medallion and the OceanNow app I could order food and drinks without leaving my lounge chair.  The Medallion essentially lets the crew know where you are on board so that when you order a slice of a pizza or an Ultimate Pina Colãda– my personal fave— they bring it right to you, whether you’re poolside or in your room!

It’s pretty awesome especially when you just don’t feel like disturbing your vacation mode on the lido deck!  You can check out my Instagram Story Cruise Highlights to see how it’s done!

Speaking of Instagram — I was able to stay connected, post, share and even go-live while aboard Caribbean Princess with no problem because of the best WiFi at sea, MedallionNet.

Those are the two massive spheres on the top of the ship.

It was insane how quickly I could stream music or movies on my iPad while we were cruisin’.  It was reliable even in my cabin or on my balcony.  Also super affordable — just $9.99 a day when you buy the package for the entire trip.

Caribbean Princess is a massive vessel housing up to 3,000 passengers and over 1200 crew members!  You can imagine how easy it could be to get lost but not with your Medallion and the OceanCompass app.

This app helps you navigate your way on board the ship with Wayfinding.  It’s basically like GPS for the ship.

OceanCompass also allows you to stay connected with your ShipMates too.  You can find their location minus the getting lost part!  We’d set up a group chat for everyone in our travel party.  This app was so helpful on board and we used it everyday with ease.

While exploring Caribbean Princess you will find large interactive portals on the walls of the ship; another interactive way to stay connected.  I  created my own OceanTagalong, a digital avatar companion that follows you around the ship on the portals.  I named mine, Celia the Sea Turtle.

Princess Cruises, Caribbean Princess, MedallionClass, MedallionClass Experience, Caribbean, Travel Blogger, Cruising the Caribbean, Plus Size Travel

With your personal OceanTagalong you can play games under the stars on the lido deck which is actually pretty cool.  You’re literally in the middle of the ocean playing on a massive screen under the twinkly lights of the night sky.

You can also play location based scavenger hunts on board.  This is a great feature with families with little kids; they will have fun and stay busy during days at sea exploring the ship.  Or you can play a game of word search like me while waiting for the elevator on the way to dinner at the Crown Grille — my favorite restaurant on board Caribbean Princess.

Princess Cruises, Caribbean Princess, MedallionClass, MedallionClass Experience, Caribbean, Travel Blogger, Cruising the Caribbean, Plus Size TravelThere is just so much to see, do and take in both on and off the ship because of the MedallionClass Experience.  I can definitely say that cruising the Caribbean with Princess Cruises has completely changed my concept of sailing the seas.

I can’t wait to share with you more about my time on and off Caribbean Princess.  Next Stop was our first port, Grand Cayman where I actually swam with stingrays.  Stay tuned for my next cruise post next week!

Oh and don’t forget to let me know if you have any questions that you’d like me to answer about the cruise life with Princess Cruises.
