Believe it or not, you really do have plenty of time one you disembark at each port. Most port days have an early arrival and late depart time. So depending on the excursion you choose, you can be wrapped early enough in the day to still explore the country on your own.
On my 5 day Mediteranean cruise I planned it out to spend 4 days prior to embarkation day. So that meant 4 full days of exploring Venice! It was so much fun and felt like a separate trip before a trip.
From Venice I also visited the colorful island of Burano. Then once on board SKY PRINCESS we traveled to Kotor, Montenegro and Athens Greece.
