<p>The word &#8220;denim&#8221; is actually derived from the French term <em>serge de Nîmes, or </em>&#8220;serge from Nîmes.&#8221; Serge is a type of sturdy, ridged twill fabric, and the French city of Nîmes was known for its textiles—and was churning out indigo pants long before Levi&#8217;s.</p>
